Humboldt County
Situated along the spectacular Northern California coastline 280 miles north of San Francisco, the City of Eureka is one of California’s best kept secrets. The city is bordered on one side by beautiful and functional Humboldt Bay, and on the other by mountains lush with giant redwoods which offer a reminder of the area’s rich logging heritage.
A variety of cultural opportunities are available in Eureka, including active artisan, arts, and theater groups. Outdoor recreation is abundant with activities such as boating, sport fishing, kayaking, hunting, birding and backpacking all available close by. Visit the Victorian era charm of “Old Town Eureka” located on 2nd and 3rd Streets. Specialty shops, restaurants and fine architecture abound. North to Arcata is the location of Humboldt State University, known for its Forestry and Natural Resources studies. Arcata is noted for the Arcata Marsh developed for the treatment of waste waters. Walk the “Arcata Plaza”, with its unique shops and dining establishments. Also the starting point of the famous “Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race” on Memorial Day weekend. Further north of Arcata is McKinleyville, with fine hiking, biking, and equestrian trails linking Arcata and the surrounding areas. Don’t miss the majestic Trinidad coast with its offshore rock formations and scenic hiking trails to the beach. East you’ll find Willow Creek and Blue Lake. West is the peninsula of Samoa and south is the “do not miss visiting” the Victorian Village of Ferndale.
