Just North of Ukiah, the Mendocino County seat, is the town of Willits. Highway 101 no longer goes directly through Willits. However, it is definitely worth exiting the corridor for a visit. Willit’s is the home of the “Skunk Railway Depot.” Catch the “Skunk Train” for an incredible steam engine train ride along the Noyo River to the Fort Bragg “Skunk” terminal. A variety of day trips and overnight excursions are offered.
North of Willits is Laytonville in the large, flat, “Long Valley”. Supply headquarters for folks living in the hills, out toward Branscomb, and along the Hwy 101 corridor.
To the east is “Round Valley” where the town of Covelo is located. When leaving Highway 101, traveling towards Covelo, you’ll travel along branches of the Eel River. Traveling east off Highway 101 leads to some big, open–space scenery.
Travel west on Hwy 20 to the Pacific Coast and the town of Fort Bragg. Once reaching the coast, turn left and head further south to the eclectic village of Mendocino where you’ll find many art galleries, fine shops, bed & breakfasts and fine dining establishments. Turn right from Fort Bragg and head up to and don’t foreget to stop by Pacific Star Winery! This part of the California coast is as dramatic as it gets!
